Skin Care 101: Understanding UV Protection and Sunscreen

With summer right around the corner, it's essential to understand the importance of UV protection and incorporating sunscreen into your daily skin care routine. UV rays from the sun can cause significant damage to the skin, leading to sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer. In order to protect your skin and maintain its health, it is crucial to understand how to effectively shield yourself from these harmful rays.




There are two types of UV rays that can affect the skin: UVA and UVB. UVA rays can prematurely age the skin, causing wrinkles and age spots, while UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn. When selecting a sunscreen, it is essential to look for a product with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. SPF measures the sunscreen's ability to protect the skin from UVB rays. It is recommended to apply sunscreen generously to all exposed skin at least 15 minutes before going outside and to reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.

Wearing protective clothing, such as hats and sunglasses, seeking shade during peak sun hours, and avoiding tanning beds can help reduce your risk of skin damage.
